- Taxation: Prevented creation of a special tax district for part of Lake James.
- FERC: With conditions, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission licenses Duke Power to generate electricity using public water. Two members of our organization are volunteer representatives involved in the current re-licensing process. They have been working tirelessly to assure that the conditions, including lake levels, which will eventually be mandated by the Federal Government, are fair to all the parties that use the Catawba River water from Lake James to Lake Wateree in SC. This re-licensing only occurs every 30-50 years and we will be living with the rules for our lifetime.
- FERC’s Low Inflow Protocol (for drought conditions): How low does the level of Lake James go, before cities downstream implement water saving efforts? Our representatives are involved in working with Duke Power during their re-licensing process for power generation to determine LIP procedure.
- Drought Rules: Members reviewed North Carolina’s proposed drought rules and submitted public comments. FERC’s LIP will have more impact on reservoirs like Lake James, than NC’s drought rules.
- IBT requests: An Inter-basin Transfer of water means a municipality in one river basin wants to permanently remove water from another basin for their use. CLJ has opposed such a transfer by Concord and Kannapolis from the Catawba River Basin by providing input into the approval process. This involves politicians on the local and state level and other organizations that are concerned about the effect on all water users in the Catawba River Basin. Some of our issues have been addressed as this process continues. We are still awaiting decisions on others.
- IBT legislation: Members of CLJ are working to have a bill passed that would put stricter limits on granting IBT proposals.
- Local Politicians: Local politicians have made presentations to the board and have responded to many good questions from our members.
- Marine Commission: As part of the speaker program, we heard a presentation by the Executive Director of the Lake Norman Marine Commission, which is set up by statute, and has certain enforcement powers over their lake. This gave us insights about what to expect as Lake James continues to develop.
- Public Use of the Lake: We have had a speaker from SOAR, which is an organization that helps handicap persons enjoy the lake experience.
- Lake James State Park Expansion: We have become informed about the several thousand acre expansion of the State Park and have a member on the Lake James State Park Advisory Committee, appointed by the NC Department of Environment and Natural Resources
- New developments: Crescent Resources presented future development plans for various areas of the lake.
- Rebuilding of all Dams: Duke Power presented plans and information on strengthening all the dams on Lake James and how it would impact the recreation and residents on the lake.
- CERT: The Community Emergency Response Team is a volunteer group of our members that have had basic training in helping people during local disasters. We expect the “CERT” team to grow and be available to help our membership and others in need.
- Environmental issues: CLJ helped coordinate the Annual Lake James Clean-up in May and wrote letters in opposition to the sale of public forest lands. It also forwards information such as a regional warning to watch for Bears in the area.
- Sheriff’s Lake Patrol Needs: Need for donation for patrol boat and equipment have been brought to our attention.
- Accident and other Emergency Notification: Membership is informed about accidents and other emergencies on the lake as we become aware of them
As you can see from this list, our organization has been involved in many issues that affect all property owners around Lake James. Join your neighbors and fellow citizens TODAY to be part of this helpful, exciting and dynamic organization!
